Shannen brought much needed attention to the horrible conditions in her community of Attawapiskat. At just 13, she helped launch the largest youth-driven children’s rights movement in Canadian History. Children were being educated in make-shift portables on a toxic field and had been waiting for 30 years for the government to build a real school as promised. Shannen did not set out to be a leader, she just wanted to see this happen. She was nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize. Her Dream? All First Nations children and youth have equal opportunity and access to education. Tragically, Shannen died in a car accident on June 1, 2010 – not yet 16 years old. Check out this video!
